Trading-Journal Sample Segmentation: A Worked Crypto Example With Fees Included
Splitting a journal by session, setup or market shows where results come from. Slice too finely and every segment is noise.
Short answer
Sample segmentation divides trades into groups (e.g. by session) and compares net results. Example: 80 trades split into Asia (22, +$640), Europe (31, +$1,120) and US (27, −$310) after fees. The US loss might be real, or chance at 27 trades. Report trade count and average per trade with each segment, avoid more segments than the sample supports, and confirm a finding on the next period before acting.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Total trades | 80 |
| Asia (22) | +$640 (≈ +$29/trade) |
| Europe (31) | +$1,120 (≈ +$36/trade) |
| US (27) | −$310 (≈ −$11/trade) |
| Next step | Confirm on next 80 trades |

Sources and methodology
Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
