Trailing Stops in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

'Use a trailing stop to let winners run.' A trail tracks highs that may be wicks, so it can tighten faster than the trend justifies.

Short answer

A trailing stop measured from the highest high moves up on every wick, including liquidation spikes that reverse in seconds. A 4% trail from a wick high at $3,450 sits at $3,312; measured from the highest close at $3,390, it sits at $3,254. The wick-based trail exits about $58 earlier per ETH. In choppy trends, a fixed-percent trail also gives back the full trail distance on every pullback. Specify the reference (close or high) and scale the trail to volatility.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
