Unique DEX Makers: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
Unique makers count distinct wallets that traded. It is the closest DEX data comes to 'how many participants', and it can still be gamed.
Short answer
Unique makers (DEX Screener) or unique buyers and sellers (CoinGecko's onchain transactions fields) count distinct wallets trading in a window. Before a swap, compare makers with transactions (repetition), with volume (average size per wallet) and over several windows (growth or decline). One entity can use many wallets, so treat makers as an upper bound on independent participants and look for wallets funded from the same source.
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Makers rising with volume | Broadening participation |
| Makers flat, volume rising | Same wallets trading more |
| Very high txns per maker | Bots or wash trading |
| Many new wallets, same funding source | Possible sybil activity |

Example
Illustrative: makers grow from 420 to 1,150 over a week while transactions per maker stay near 3 and volume per maker is stable. That pattern looks like genuinely broader participation, not a few wallets churning.

Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
- CoinGecko onchain API: Top pools by token address (pool schema) — pool fields and nullability (fdv_usd, market_cap_usd, reserve_in_usd).
