Volume Oscillator in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
The volume oscillator compares a short and long moving average of volume. The live bar's partial volume drags the short average down until the bar fills.
Short answer
Volume oscillator = (fast MA of volume − slow MA of volume) ÷ slow MA × 100. The live bar's volume is incomplete, so early in the bar it pulls the fast average down, often turning the oscillator negative before volume catches up. The fast MA weights the live bar more, so the effect is larger with short fast lengths. Read the oscillator on closed bars.
Which part of Volume Oscillator uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Live volume | Yes | Incomplete |
| Fast MA (e.g. 5) | Yes | 1/5 weight on partial bar |
| Slow MA (e.g. 20) | Yes | 1/20 weight |
Worked: fast 5-bar average 1,000, slow 20-bar 900. With a live bar at 200 so far (others 1,000), fast ≈ 840 → oscillator ≈ −7%; at a final 1,200, fast ≈ 1,040 → ≈ +16%.
