VWMA Crossover Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs

A VWMA crossover uses volume-weighted averages instead of simple ones. The question a backtest must answer is whether the volume weighting adds anything.

Short answer

A VWMA crossover rule buys when a fast VWMA crosses above a slow VWMA and sells on the reverse. Volume weighting pulls averages toward prices where heavy trading occurred, which can speed up crosses after high-volume moves. Test it against the same SMA crossover on the same data with the same costs; if the difference is small or inconsistent, the simpler version is preferable. Use the venue's own volume and closed bars.
