Weighted Moving Average in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
A linearly weighted moving average gives the newest bar weight N out of N(N+1)/2. That equals 2/(N+1) — the same live-bar weight as an EMA of the same length.
Short answer
WMA(N) = Σ(weight × close) ÷ Σ weights, with weights N for the newest bar down to 1 for the oldest. The live bar's weight is N ÷ (N(N+1)/2) = 2/(N+1): for N = 20, ≈ 0.095, identical to a 20-EMA's α. So inside the live bar, WMA and EMA move by about the same amount; they differ in how older bars are weighted. Crosses with price behave like EMA crosses intrabar.
Which part of WMA uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Newest bar weight | Yes | 2/(N+1) |
| Older bars | No | Linearly declining |
| WMA | Yes | ≈ EMA intrabar move |
Worked: N = 20 → weights sum to 210; newest weight 20/210 ≈ 0.095. A $500 swing moves the WMA about $48.
