Wilder Moving Average in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Wilder's moving average (RMA) is the smoothing inside RSI, ATR and ADX. It weights the live bar at 1/N, about half as much as an EMA of the same length.
Short answer
Wilder's moving average = previous value + (price − previous value) ÷ N, which is an EMA with α = 1/N instead of 2/(N+1). For N = 14 the live bar gets 1/14 ≈ 0.071 weight, versus ≈ 0.133 for a 14-EMA. Inside the live bar the value moves by price change × 1/N, so a $500 swing moves a 14-period RMA by about $36. Because RSI, ATR and ADX use this smoothing, their intrabar behaviour inherits it. Use closed-bar values for rules.
Which part of Wilder MA uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Previous RMA | No | Fixed |
| (price − prev) ÷ N | Yes | Moves 1/N × change |
| Derived indicators (RSI, ATR, ADX) | Yes | Inherit the weight |
Wilder smoothing is slower than an EMA of the same nominal length: a 14-period RMA behaves roughly like a 27-period EMA (α = 2/28 = 1/14).
