A Low-Liquidity Token Exit Plan: Size the Position Before the Swap

On a thin token, the hard part is not buying. It is selling later without crushing the price. Size the position for the exit before you enter.

Short answer

Before buying a low-liquidity token, estimate the price impact of selling your entire position into the main pool: in a constant-product pool, selling tokens worth a fraction f of the quote reserve at the current price returns roughly f ÷ (1 + f) of the reserve and moves price down by about 1 − 1/(1+f)². Set a maximum exit impact (for example 3%) and size the position so a full exit stays within it, assuming liquidity could fall. Plan the exit in tranches if needed.

Example: liquidity halves

Illustrative: a trader buys $3,000 of a token whose pool holds $200,000 of quote reserve, expecting a ~3% exit cost. A week later, liquidity providers withdraw half; quote reserve is $100,000. A full exit now moves price about 6% and returns noticeably less. Sizing with a liquidity haircut would have kept the exit within plan.

Conclusion

Size thin-token positions so a full exit stays within your maximum price impact, even if liquidity shrinks.

Questions readers ask

How big a position can I exit?

Small relative to the quote reserve; about 1.5% of reserve for ~3% impact in a constant-product pool.

What if liquidity falls?

Exit impact rises; size with a haircut.

Can I exit in tranches?

Yes, if arbitrage or other buyers restore the pool between sales.

Sources and methodology

Exit arithmetic uses the constant-product formula from Uniswap's documentation. Examples are illustrative.

  1. Uniswap: Concentrated liquidity — active liquidity within price ranges.
  2. DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
