How Much Liquidity Does a DEX Trade Need? Calculate Price Impact
Liquidity numbers mean little until you translate them into how much your trade will move the price. For a simple pool, the arithmetic is short.
Short answer
In a constant-product pool (x × y = k), buying Δx of the token from a pool holding X tokens and Y quote moves price by roughly 2 × (trade size ÷ quote reserve) for small trades; more precisely, you pay Y × Δx ÷ (X − Δx). Illustrative: a pool with $100,000 of quote reserve, a $1,000 buy moves price about 2% and costs about 1% average slippage. Concentrated-liquidity pools can be deeper or shallower near the current price, so check active liquidity, and add fees.
Constant-product arithmetic
Pool: X = 1,000,000 tokens, Y = 100,000 USDC, price = Y/X = $0.10. You spend ΔY USDC. Tokens received Δx = X × ΔY / (Y + ΔY). The new pool price is (Y + ΔY) / (X − Δx), and your average price is ΔY / Δx.
| Spend (USDC) | Tokens out | Avg price | New pool price | Price move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 9,901 | $0.1010 | $0.1020 | +2.0% |
| 5,000 | 47,619 | $0.1050 | $0.1103 | +10.3% |
| 10,000 | 90,909 | $0.1100 | $0.1210 | +21.0% |

Selling has the same impact
The arithmetic works in reverse when you sell. Exiting a position that was large relative to the pool will move price against you just as entering did. Before entering, estimate exit impact at your full size, assuming liquidity could be lower when you want to leave.
Splitting a trade into smaller swaps over time reduces impact only if arbitrage or other traders restore the pool between swaps.
Concentrated liquidity
In concentrated pools (Uniswap v3-style, Raydium CLMM), only in-range liquidity trades. Depth near price can exceed or fall short of what TVL suggests. See Concentrated Liquidity vs Total TVL: Measure Active Depth. Exiting a position has the same impact maths in reverse: see Token Market Cap vs Exit Liquidity: Why Valuation Is Not Cash.
Translate pool reserves into expected price impact for your size before trading, and add fees.

How much liquidity do I need?
Enough that 2 × trade ÷ quote reserve is a move you accept; e.g. for <1% impact, reserve > 200× trade.
Does this apply to concentrated pools?
Approximately; use active liquidity near the current price.
Are fees included?
No; add the pool fee.
Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- Uniswap: Concentrated liquidity — active liquidity within price ranges.
- Raydium: Staking into farms — CPMM vs CLMM pools.
