ADX in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
ADX measures trend strength from directional movement smoothed over many bars. It changes intrabar, but slowly; the bigger risk is reading its direction too early.
Short answer
ADX is a smoothed average of DX, which compares +DI and −DI, themselves smoothed from directional movement (current high/low versus previous). The current bar's high and low feed +DM/−DM and true range, so ADX updates intrabar as new highs or lows print. Heavy smoothing (Wilder's method, typically 14) keeps intrabar changes small, but a threshold cross such as ADX rising above 25 can still appear and disappear in a volatile bar. Use closed values and judge ADX slope over several bars.
Which part of ADX uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| +DM / −DM | Yes (current high/low) | Jump on new extremes |
| True range | Yes | Grows with range |
| +DI / −DI | Yes | Moderate |
| ADX (smoothed DX) | Yes | Small changes |
Because ADX smooths DX over many bars, one bar contributes only a fraction, so intrabar changes are small. But near a threshold, small is enough.

Open ChartsPod replayQuestions readers ask
Does ADX repaint?
Its live value changes until close; closed values don't.
Why is ADX slow?
It is double-smoothed.
Is the 25 threshold reliable intrabar?
Not near the threshold; use closed bars.
