DMI in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
The DMI's +DI and −DI lines react to each new high or low in the current bar. Their crossovers are popular signals and among the easiest to see vanish intrabar.
Short answer
DMI consists of +DI (upward directional movement ÷ true range, smoothed) and −DI (downward). A new intrabar high raises +DM; a new intrabar low raises −DM; both lines move as the bar develops. A bar that spikes up then reverses down can show +DI crossing above −DI mid-bar and back below by the close. Use closed-bar crosses, and because the current bar's extremes can only expand during the bar, expect DI values to settle only at the close.
Which part of DMI uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Current high vs previous high | Yes | +DM grows with new highs |
| Previous low vs current low | Yes | −DM grows with new lows |
| True range | Yes | Expands with range |
| +DI / −DI | Yes | Both move |
Wilder's rules use only the larger of the up-move and down-move for each bar. A bar that first extends up and then extends further down can switch which one counts, flipping the DI contribution within the bar.
