Base-Volume vs Quote-Volume CVD in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
CVD can be summed in coins (base volume) or in dollars (quote volume). Over long windows with big price moves, the two diverge.
Short answer
Base-volume CVD sums buy-minus-sell amounts in coins; quote-volume CVD sums them in quote currency (e.g. USDT). Over a short window they move together; over a long window with a large price change, a dollar of buying early is fewer coins than a dollar later, so the two lines diverge. Price response studies should use one consistently. Quote-volume CVD reflects money committed; base-volume CVD reflects coins exchanged.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Both rise | Consistent buying |
| Quote rises faster | Buying at higher prices |
| Diverge over long window | Price change effect |
| Mixed units | Invalid comparison |
Measuring the response
Choose one unit per study and state it. When comparing venues with different contract types (linear vs inverse), convert to the same unit first.
Example
Illustrative: over a month in which price rose from $55,000 to $70,000, base CVD rose 1,000 BTC while quote CVD rose about $63M. The same buying looks different in each chart.
