Trade-Count Delta in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Trade-count delta counts buy-aggressor trades minus sell-aggressor trades, ignoring size. It shows participation, not weight.
Short answer
Trade-count delta = number of buy-aggressor trades − number of sell-aggressor trades. Unlike volume delta, it treats a 0.001 BTC trade the same as a 50 BTC one, so it reflects how many participants pushed each way. When count delta and volume delta disagree — many small buys, few large sells — price response shows which group dominated. Measure price change against both deltas over the same windows.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Price follows count delta | Broad participation leading |
| Price follows volume delta | Large traders leading |
| Both agree | Strong reading |
| Disagree, price flat | Groups offsetting |
Measuring the response
Compute both deltas per bar from trades; record which better explains price change over many bars.
Example
Illustrative: 420 more buy trades than sell trades in five minutes, but 85 BTC net selling by volume; price falls 12 bps. Size, not count, led.
