Binance Open-Interest Data: Event Time vs Retrieval Time

Binance gives live open interest with a time field and historical OI by period. The two answer different timing questions.

Short answer

The openInterest endpoint returns current OI with a time field; openInterestHist returns sumOpenInterest and sumOpenInterestValue per period with a timestamp, covering about the last month and omitting periods with no trades. Use the live time for snapshots and the period timestamp for history. Don't mix them in one series without labelling, and record retrieval time for live calls.

Illustrative: a chart plots 5-minute history and appends a live reading at 12:03:17; the last point looks like a sudden OI jump because it's a snapshot, not a period statistic.

Sources and methodology

Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference and CoinGecko's onchain API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema doesn't document a timestamp, this guide says so and recommends recording retrieval time yourself.
