Bollinger Band Width in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Band Width measures how far apart Bollinger Bands are relative to the middle line. A single big live bar can lift it out of a 'squeeze' before the close.
Short answer
Bollinger Band Width = (upper − lower) ÷ middle, which equals 4 × standard deviation ÷ SMA for 2-sigma bands. Because standard deviation includes the live bar, one large intrabar move can raise Band Width sharply, ending an apparent squeeze; if price returns, the reading falls back. Squeeze rules (Band Width at an N-bar low) should be evaluated on closed bars, and expansion confirmed after the close.
Which part of Bollinger Band Width uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Std dev (20) | Yes | Rises with a big live move |
| SMA (20) | Yes | Small change |
| Band Width | Yes | Can leave squeeze intrabar |
Standard deviation squares deviations, so one outlying live price affects it far more than one ordinary bar.
