Bollinger Bands in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Bollinger Bands are an SMA plus and minus k standard deviations. Inside the live bar, a big move widens the bands while price pushes toward them.
Short answer
Bollinger Bands = SMA(20) ± 2 × standard deviation of the last 20 closes. The live price enters both the middle line (1/20 weight) and the deviation. A sharp intrabar move pushes price toward a band and simultaneously widens the bands, so a mid-bar 'band break' can shrink or vanish by the close as the band expands or price retreats. Band touches and closes outside the bands should be judged on closed bars.
Which part of Bollinger Bands uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Middle (SMA 20) | Yes | 1/20 weight |
| Standard deviation | Yes | Rises with live move |
| Upper/lower bands | Yes | Expand away from price |
A close outside the band requires price to outrun a band that is itself moving outward; intrabar breaks overstate how often that happens.
