Break-Even Win Rates in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

The break-even win rate formula gives a precise number. Your measured win rate is an estimate with a wide error band on small samples.

Short answer

Break-even win rate = average loss ÷ (average win + average loss). With net figures from earlier examples it might be 37.4%. If your journal shows 40% over 50 trades, it looks like an edge — but the 95% range for a 40% rate on 50 trades is roughly ±13.6 points (about 26% to 54%). The comparison is inconclusive. Also, average win and loss are themselves estimates. Compare with enough trades, and use net figures.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
