Buy-Sell Dominance Ratios in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Buy-sell dominance ratios show which side's aggressive volume dominated a bar or window. Price response tells whether dominance translated into movement.
Short answer
A dominance ratio (buy-aggressor volume ÷ total aggressor volume) above 50% means buyers were more aggressive. It can coincide with price rising (aggression succeeding) or not (absorption). Test it: group bars by dominance bucket and measure next-bar or next-N-bar returns; check whether high dominance without price progress precedes reversals. Use trade-based side data and report sample size per bucket.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| High buy dominance, price up | Aggression succeeded |
| High buy dominance, price flat | Absorption candidate |
| Balanced | Two-sided |
| Thin bars | Noisy ratios |
Measuring the response
Compute dominance per bar from trades, bucket bars, and compare forward returns; separate bars where price did and didn't move with dominance.
Example
Illustrative: bars with over 60% buy dominance but flat price were followed by declines more often than other buckets.
