CCI in Crypto: Warm-Up Bars and Short-History Errors
CCI uses a simple moving average and mean deviation over N bars. It's exact once the window fills — but unbounded values on short histories can mislead.
Short answer
CCI(20) needs 20 bars of typical price. It's window-based (SMA and mean absolute deviation), so values are exact once the window is full and don't depend on earlier history. On new listings, the window may contain launch volatility, inflating mean deviation and compressing CCI, or a quiet period that makes small moves read as extreme. Mark the first valid bar and compare CCI levels only across comparable history.
How much history CCI needs
| Component | Bars needed | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price | 1 | Per bar |
| SMA (20) | 20 | Window |
| Mean deviation (20) | 20 | Window |
| CCI | 20 | Window |
Window-based: once the window is full, the value is exact and doesn't depend on earlier history.
Short-history errors
- Launch volatility compressing CCI
- Quiet windows exaggerating
- Values before window fills
- Comparing coins of different age
