ChartsPod Footprint Tick Grouping: Settings to Check Before Your First Analysis
Tick grouping sets how many price ticks form one footprint row. It is the setting that changes every number on the chart.
Short answer
Tick grouping (row size) defines how many minimum price increments are merged into one footprint row. Small groupings show fine detail but many sparse rows; large groupings show clear structure but hide detail. Before analysis, choose a grouping that gives roughly 10–30 rows on a typical candle at your timeframe, fix it per market, and keep it the same when comparing days, alerts or tools. Changing grouping changes imbalances, stacks and candle POCs.
What it shows
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Tick size | Exchange's minimum increment |
| Grouping | Ticks per row |
| Row price span | Tick size × grouping |
| Rows per candle | Candle range ÷ span |

Worked example
Illustrative: BTC perp with $0.10 ticks on 1-minute candles averaging $120 range. Grouping 50 ticks ($5 rows) gives about 24 rows, enough to see where volume sat without hundreds of near-empty cells.
