Footprint Tick Grouping in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

Changing tick grouping changes which footprint patterns appear. Price response tells you which grouping shows patterns that matter.

Short answer

Tick grouping sets the price span of each footprint row, and patterns such as imbalances, stacks and candle POCs depend on it. To choose a grouping, compare how well patterns at each grouping predict price response over the next few bars. Fine grouping produces many patterns with weak follow-through; coarse grouping produces fewer patterns that may respond better but react later. Pick the grouping whose patterns respond most consistently for your market and timeframe, then keep it fixed.

Measuring the response

Run the same logging (pattern, next-bar response) at two or three groupings for a few weeks. Compare follow-through rates and the number of usable signals.

Example

Hypothetical example: on a BTC perp 5-minute chart, $1 rows produced 38 stacks a day with 34% follow-through; $5 rows produced 11 a day with 52%; $20 rows produced 3 with 58% but often after most of the move. $5 balanced count and response.
