ChartsPod Options Volatility Surface: Settings to Check Before Your First Analysis

ChartsPod's options workspace lists volatility surfaces. A surface combines smiles across expiries; its axes and IV type need checking first.

Short answer

A volatility surface plots implied volatility by strike (or delta) and expiry. Before reading it, check the axes (strike vs delta, days vs dates), the IV type (mark, bid, ask), how strikes without quotes are handled (interpolated or blank), and the snapshot time. Interpolated areas look smooth but aren't market quotes. Compare surfaces at the same time of day.

Common first-session mistakes:

  • Reading interpolated areas as quotes
  • Bid IV with no bids
  • Comparing surfaces at different times

Worked example

Illustrative: a far-put wing looks smooth on the surface but every point is interpolated — no bids existed there. See Options Volatility Smiles in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context and Options Volatility Term Structure in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context.
