Concentrated Liquidity Outside the Current Price: Why TVL Can Mislead

A concentrated pool can hold millions while almost none of it sits at the current price. When price leaves the ranges, TVL stays and depth disappears.

Short answer

In concentrated-liquidity pools, providers choose price ranges; liquidity outside the current price is inactive (Uniswap documents this). When price moves outside where most ranges sit, the pool's TVL barely changes but usable depth can collapse, making even small trades move price sharply. Before trading, look at where liquidity sits relative to the current price, not the total, and recheck after large moves.

Out-of-range positions hold only one token and do not trade until price returns. TVL counts them anyway.

Example: a small trade, a big move

Illustrative: a token falls 15% in an hour. The CLMM pool still reports $1.25M TVL, so a trader expects a $3,000 sell to move price by a fraction of a percent. Only $35,000 is in range near the new price; the sell moves price about 9% because it pushes through thin ranges.

An hour later providers reposition and in-range depth returns to $300,000; the same sell would now move price about 2%. The pool's TVL was the same in both cases. Waiting for liquidity to return, or using a constant-product pool if one exists, would have saved most of the impact.

The general rule: after sharp moves, check in-range depth again before trading a concentrated pool.

In concentrated pools, judge depth by in-range liquidity near current price, and recheck after big moves.
