Concentrated Liquidity vs Total TVL: Measure Active Depth

In a concentrated-liquidity pool, total value locked can be large while depth at the current price is small. Measure the part that trades.

Short answer

In concentrated-liquidity pools, liquidity providers choose price ranges, and only liquidity whose range includes the current price is active (Uniswap's documentation). Total value locked counts all positions, including out-of-range ones. To measure usable depth, look at the liquidity distribution around the current price, estimate how much a given trade moves price through those ranges, and recheck as price moves, because positions go in and out of range. Raydium's CLMM documentation similarly ties rewards to in-range liquidity.

Depth can vanish

Liquidity providers in concentrated pools often move or withdraw positions when volatility rises. Active depth can thin just before or during large moves, exactly when you need it. Treat measured depth as an upper bound in fast markets.

Worked example: impact inside and outside the range

Illustrative: a concentrated pool holds $1.3M, of which $120k sits within ±2% of the current price. A $5,000 buy stays inside that band and moves price roughly in line with $120k of depth. A $40,000 buy exhausts the near band and moves into thinner ranges above, where depth per percent is lower, so impact accelerates.

The same TVL would suggest far less impact if liquidity were spread evenly. That is why TVL alone misleads in concentrated pools: what matters is depth along the path your trade will travel.

When comparing pools, measure depth over the price path your trade size needs, not at a single point.

Practice

Positions can be withdrawn or moved quickly, so active depth can thin before volatile moves. See How Much Liquidity Does a DEX Trade Need? Calculate Price Impact and How to Compare Two Liquidity Pools for the Same Token.

Use in-range liquidity near the current price, not TVL, to judge depth in concentrated pools.

Questions readers ask

What is active liquidity?

Liquidity from positions whose price range includes the current price.

Why is my slippage high in a large-TVL pool?

Most liquidity may be out of range.

Does depth change?

Yes, as price moves and LPs adjust ranges.

Sources and methodology

DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.

  1. Uniswap: Concentrated liquidity — active liquidity within price ranges.
  2. Raydium: Staking into farms — CPMM vs CLMM pools.
  3. CoinGecko API: Top pools by token address — multiple pools per token.
