Crypto Screener Snapshots: Null vs Zero - Handle Missing Fields Correctly

A screener snapshot is a table of values at one moment for many symbols. Some cells are missing because the indicator isn't ready, the symbol is new or the data failed.

Short answer

In a screener snapshot, a blank cell can mean the indicator lacks enough history (a 200-bar average on a 50-bar-old listing), the symbol has no trades in the window, or data failed to load. Each should be distinguishable: 'insufficient history', 'no activity' (often a real zero for volume) and 'error'. Conditions should state how blanks are treated — usually excluded rather than passed or failed silently. Store the snapshot time with results.

Illustrative: a screen for 'RSI below 30' includes a coin listed yesterday whose RSI was computed on 6 bars. Its 'oversold' reading is an artefact of short history.

Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference, CoinGecko's onchain API documentation and Binance's Spot API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema was not visible in the documentation, this guide says so and describes defensive handling rather than asserting field behaviour.
