Crypto Indicator Series: Null vs Zero - Handle Missing Fields Correctly
Indicator series start with warm-up bars where the value can't be computed yet. Filling those with zero creates signals that never existed.
Short answer
Most indicators need N bars before producing a value: a 20-SMA is undefined for the first 19 bars, and recursive indicators like EMA or RSI need extra bars to settle. Those warm-up values are missing (NaN/null), not zero. Zero-filling them creates false crosses and extreme oscillator readings at the start of every series. Drop or flag warm-up bars, and note that EMA-type indicators depend slightly on where the series started.
Fields and what missing values mean
| Field | Null / absent means | Zero / empty means |
|---|---|---|
| First N−1 bars (SMA) | Undefined | — |
| EMA/RSI early bars | Defined but unsettled | — |
| Oscillator 0 | — | Real only after warm-up |
| Gap in source candles | Missing | — |
| Series start | Affects recursive values | — |

Illustrative: a backtest's first trade fires on bar 3 because RSI was zero-filled and read as 'oversold'. The signal came from missing data.

What are warm-up bars?
Bars before an indicator has enough history.
Can I set them to zero?
No; that creates false signals.
Why do EMAs differ by start date?
They're recursive and depend on the starting point.
Sources and methodology
Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference, CoinGecko's onchain API documentation and Binance's Spot API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema was not visible in the documentation, this guide says so and describes defensive handling rather than asserting field behaviour.
