CVD Divergence at a Range High in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
At a range high, CVD rising to a new high while price fails to break out suggests sellers absorbing buyers. The reaction afterwards is the test.
Short answer
At a range high, a bearish CVD divergence (price retests the high while CVD makes a higher high, meaning more aggressive buying) suggests passive sellers absorbed buyers. Confirmation comes from price response: a quick rejection back into the range supports absorption; acceptance above the high with continued buying means the sellers gave way and a breakout is underway. Watch perpetual funding too: rising funding at the high adds crowded longs who may be forced out on rejection.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Quick rejection into range | Sellers absorbed buyers |
| Hold at the high | Contest unresolved |
| Acceptance above high | Breakout; absorption failed |
| Wick above, close inside | Stops run, then rejection |
Measuring the response
Measure price change after the test bar over a fixed number of bars and compare with range height. Add funding and OI change during the tests to see whether leveraged longs piled in.
Example
Illustrative: second test at 61,000 shows 1,600 BTC of net buying versus 900 at the first, with funding rising to +0.03% per 8h. Price closes back at 60,700 and falls to 60,300 within four bars as longs exit.
