Ethereum DEX Token Charts: Separate Gas Cost From Trading Price Impact
On Ethereum mainnet, a small swap can lose more to gas than to price impact; a large one the opposite. Separate the two before judging what a trade costs.
Short answer
An Ethereum DEX trade has two separate costs: gas, a fixed-ish fee paid in ETH that does not depend on trade size, and price impact plus pool fee, which scale with trade size relative to pool liquidity. For small trades gas dominates; for large trades impact dominates. Calculate both as a percentage of trade size before swapping. Neither appears on the price chart: the chart shows execution prices, not what each trader paid in total.

Illustrative: gas cost of a swap $8. Pool with $500,000 quote reserve, 0.3% fee. Impact for a small trade ≈ 2 × size ÷ reserve.
| Trade size | Gas % | Impact + fee % | Total % |
|---|---|---|---|
| $200 | 4.0% | 0.38% | 4.38% |
| $2,000 | 0.4% | 1.1% | 1.5% |
| $20,000 | 0.04% | 8.3% | 8.34% |
Why the chart doesn't show it
Each candle records the price at which swaps executed. Gas is paid separately, and impact shows only as the price your trade moved. A chart with tight candles does not mean trading is cheap; it may mean nobody is trading large size.
Gas changes during the day
Gas on Ethereum depends on network demand, so the same swap can cost several times more during busy periods. For small trades, waiting for a quieter period may halve the total cost; for large trades, gas is a rounding error and timing matters less than liquidity.
If you trade regularly, record gas paid per swap in your journal alongside impact and fees. Over a month, the split shows whether your trade sizes suit mainnet or would be cheaper on an L2 or exchange.
Remember that failed transactions also pay gas. A swap that reverts because slippage tolerance was too tight still costs the network fee.
Alternatives
If gas makes small trades uneconomic, the same token may trade on an L2 or a centralised exchange. Exchange markets have order books, fees and no per-trade gas; analysis for those markets is covered in ChartsPod on its supported venues. See How Much Liquidity Does a DEX Trade Need? Express gas and impact as percentages of your trade size, and trade only where the total is acceptable.

Is gas included in the DEX price?
No; gas is paid separately to the network.
Why is my small trade so expensive?
Gas is roughly fixed, so it is a large percentage of a small trade.
Why is my large trade expensive?
Price impact grows with size relative to liquidity.
Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- Uniswap: Concentrated liquidity — active liquidity within price ranges.
- CoinGecko API: Top pools by token address — multiple pools per token.
