Footprint Absorption vs Exhaustion: Compare Price Response
Absorption and exhaustion both appear near turning points. The difference is in how price responds to volume.
Short answer
Absorption means heavy aggression meets passive orders and price fails to move much despite large volume. Exhaustion means aggression fades: volume and delta shrink as price reaches an extreme, so the move runs out of participants. Compare volume with price progress: large volume and little progress suggest absorption; shrinking volume with slowing progress suggests exhaustion. Both are hypotheses until price reacts.
Two patterns
Measuring price response
| Bar | Aggressive volume (BTC) | Price progress (ticks) | Volume per tick |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 120 | 40 | 3 |
| 2 | 300 | 8 | 37.5 |
| 3 | 60 | 3 | 20 |
Illustrative: bar 2 shows absorption (huge volume, tiny progress); bar 3 shows exhaustion (volume collapses).
Mistakes
Calling absorption at any high-volume bar: high volume during a strong trend can simply be participation. Calling exhaustion at any low-volume bar: quiet periods are not always ends of moves. Ignoring location: both patterns matter most at levels that already mattered, such as prior highs, value-area edges or round numbers.
Using the volume-per-tick measure helps, but it should be compared with the market's typical values for that time of day. A spike relative to normal is information; a value in isolation is not.
