Positive Delta With Falling Price: Absorption or Incomplete Data?
Buyers are aggressive, yet price falls. That can mean a seller is absorbing them with resting orders, or that the delta you are reading is missing part of the market.
Short answer
Positive delta with falling price has two families of explanation. Absorption: aggressive buyers are hitting a large passive seller who keeps refilling offers, so buying fails to lift price and sellers lower their asks. Incomplete data: the delta is estimated from bars rather than trades, covers only one venue while another leads, or has gaps or a reset. Rule out the data explanations first (venue, method, coverage, reset), then look for absorption evidence in the order book and footprint.
Two families of explanation
Rule out data issues first
TradingView documents its CVD as estimated from lower-timeframe bar direction. A sub-bar that closes up after heavy selling counts as buying, which can produce positive delta during a decline. A trade-based delta avoids that specific error. See Trade-Based CVD vs Candle-Based CVD: Why Results Differ.
Evidence for absorption
| Evidence | Where |
|---|---|
| Offers repeatedly refilled at or just above price | Order book / heatmap |
| Large buy volume at the same prices with little progress | Footprint |
| Offers stepping lower over time | Heatmap |
| Rising OI while price falls (new shorts) | Derivatives |
A habit for these situations
When you see positive delta and falling price, write a one-line hypothesis ('absorption by a seller at 60,100' or 'delta estimate unreliable here') and the evidence you will check. Then check it. Recording both the hypothesis and the result builds a personal reference for how often each explanation is right on your market.
Worked example and mistakes
Illustrative: over 20 minutes on a perpetual, delta is +300 BTC while price falls 0.4%. The heatmap shows a persistent offer band stepping down; footprint shows heavy buying at each step with little progress; OI rises. All three point to absorption by a seller building shorts.
Common mistakes: calling absorption from delta alone; reading spot delta against perp price; and ignoring a reset that split the window. Each produces a confident but unsupported story.
Check delta, book and footprint together on the same perpetual.

Is positive delta with falling price bullish?
Not by itself; it often reflects passive selling absorbing buyers.
Could the data be wrong?
Yes: estimated delta, venue mismatch, gaps or resets can all cause it.
What confirms absorption?
Refilled offers in the book and heavy buying with little progress on the footprint.
