How to Use TradingView for Crypto: Symbols, Exchanges and Chart Data
TradingView lists the same coin on many exchanges, as spot pairs, perpetuals and aggregated indexes. Choosing the right symbol is the first analysis decision you make.
Short answer
To use TradingView for crypto, search by the exchange-specific symbol you actually trade, not just the coin. Each listing combines an exchange prefix, base and quote (for example a Binance BTC/USDT spot pair), and perpetual contracts are listed separately from spot, typically marked with a .P suffix; confirm the market type in the symbol's details. Aggregated or index symbols blend several sources and are useful for context, not execution. Then check volume units, available intervals for your plan and the history depth before applying indicators.
Step 1: choose the exact market
Typing "BTC" into symbol search returns dozens of results: spot pairs on each exchange, perpetual and dated futures, and aggregated indexes. They are different markets with different volume and sometimes different prices.
| Symbol type | What it represents | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange spot pair | One exchange's spot book | Spot trading on that exchange |
| Exchange perpetual (often .P) | One exchange's perpetual contract | Perp trading, funding context |
| Aggregated / index | Blend of several sources | Context, long-term charts |

Step 2: understand the chart data you get
TradingView's volume profile guide notes that for crypto, volume can be base or quote volume. Intervals and history depend on plan: the pricing page lists no intraday replay history on Basic, 180 days of minute data on Essential, 365 on Plus, and all minute and second data from Premium. Second-based intervals are listed for paid plans.
Step 3: apply indicators that respect crypto data
- Volume-based studies (VWAP, volume profile, CVD) depend on the venue's volume; aggregated symbols mix venues. See TradingView Volume Profile for Crypto: Select the Range and Volume Units and TradingView CVD for Crypto: Intrabar Estimates and Anchor Settings.
- Sessions: crypto trades 24/7, so session-anchored studies reset at a clock time you should know.
- Footprint on TradingView is estimated from intrabar data; see TradingView Footprint vs Trade-Based Footprint: Data Differences.
