TradingView Volume Profile for Crypto: Select the Range and Volume Units
A volume profile's POC and value area depend on the range you choose and the volume unit underneath. Set both deliberately on 24/7 crypto markets.
Short answer
TradingView offers volume profiles as session, visible range, fixed range, periodic and auto-anchored variants, with POC as the highest-volume level and a default 70% value area. For crypto, choose the range that matches your question (a defined event or period, not whatever is on screen), confirm whether volume is in base or quote units, and remember that up/down volume is classified by bar direction from lower-timeframe bars, not by trade side.
Pick the range for your question
| Profile type | Range | Good for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session | Each session | Daily structure | Crypto sessions are clock-defined |
| Visible range | What's on screen | Quick context | Changes when you scroll or zoom |
| Fixed range | Two points you set | An event or swing | Not available during Bar Replay |
| Periodic | Fixed calendar periods | Weekly/monthly structure | Period boundaries are arbitrary for 24/7 |
| Auto anchored | Anchored automatically | Hands-off context | Know the anchor rule |
Volume units and classification
TradingView's guide says crypto uses base or quote volume, and that up/down volume replaces buy/sell volume: a lower-timeframe bar closing at or above its open counts as up volume. The Values display can show total, up/down or delta. Profiles are built from lower-timeframe bars of the same symbol.
Base vs quote volume changes the shape only when price moves a lot within the range, because quote volume weights high-price trades more. Keep units consistent across comparisons.
Mistakes that move the POC
Three settings move a profile's point of control without any change in the market. The first is the range: a visible-range profile recalculates whenever you scroll or zoom, so a POC quoted from a screenshot cannot be reproduced unless the visible range was recorded. The second is the row count: with fewer rows, each row spans more price and the POC jumps to the centre of a wider bucket. The third is the symbol: a profile on an aggregated crypto symbol combines venues, while a profile on an exchange pair uses only that venue's volume.
On 24/7 markets a fourth issue appears: session boundaries are a clock choice. A daily session profile that resets at midnight UTC and one that resets at another time will place value differently around overnight moves. Neither is wrong, but you must know which you used.
The fix is simple and boring: use a fixed-range profile anchored to an event for any level you plan to trade, fix the row count, and save the settings beside the level in your notes.
POC and value area in practice
The POC is the single highest-volume price; the value area is the range containing a set share of volume, 70% by default. On thin altcoin markets, row count strongly changes the POC.
