Keltner Channels in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Keltner Channels set bands at a multiple of ATR around an EMA. ATR's Wilder smoothing makes the bands slower to react intrabar than Bollinger Bands.
Short answer
Keltner Channels = EMA(20) ± k × ATR(10), with k often 2. On the live bar, the EMA moves by α × price change and ATR changes through the live bar's true range, smoothed with weight 1/10. A sudden move therefore widens Keltner bands less, and more slowly, than Bollinger Bands, so intrabar breaks of Keltner bands are more likely to survive to the close — but still aren't final. Judge breaks on closed bars.
Which part of Keltner Channels uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| EMA(20) middle | Yes | α ≈ 0.095 |
| Live true range | Yes | Grows |
| ATR(10) | Yes | 1/10 weight |
| Bands | Yes | Widen slowly |
Compared with standard deviation, ATR reacts linearly and with Wilder smoothing, so Keltner bands are steadier inside a bar.
