MACD Crossover Before Candle Close: Why the Signal Can Vanish
A MACD crossover visible mid-candle can uncross before the close. Acting on it means acting on a signal that may never be confirmed.
Short answer
MACD uses the current bar's close in its moving averages; until the bar closes, that 'close' is the latest price and keeps changing. A crossover seen intrabar can therefore vanish by the close. TradingView's repainting documentation describes this real-time vs historical difference. For signals, use closed-bar crossovers; if you want earlier entries, accept and measure the higher rate of false signals rather than assuming intrabar crossovers are as reliable as closed ones.
Why it vanishes
Measure the false-signal rate
| Rule | Signals | Survive to close |
|---|---|---|
| Act on intrabar cross | 120 | 78 (65%) |
| Act on closed-bar cross | 78 | 78 (100%) |

When early signals can make sense
Some traders accept intrabar crossovers to enter earlier, using tight invalidation if the bar closes without the crossover. That can be reasonable if measured: count how often intrabar crossovers survive to the close on your market and timeframe, and compare the average result of early entries with closed-bar entries after costs. If early entries win more on average despite false starts, the trade-off may be worth it; if not, wait for the close.
Whatever you choose, make the backtest match. Historical data shows only closed crossovers, so a backtest cannot evaluate an intrabar-entry rule unless you simulate intrabar values with lower-timeframe data.
Conclusion
Use closed-bar MACD crossovers for signals, and treat intrabar crossovers as provisional.
