RSI in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close

RSI on the live candle uses the current price as if it were the close. Until the candle ends, the value keeps moving, and so do any signals based on it.

Short answer

RSI's latest value includes the current bar's change from the previous close, using the live price until the bar closes. As price moves within the bar, RSI moves too, so a cross above 70 or below 30 can appear and disappear before the close. TradingView's repainting guide describes this live vs historical difference. Use closed-bar RSI for signals and alerts (bar-close triggers), and if you watch live RSI, treat its value as provisional.

Why it changes

RSI averages gains and losses including the latest bar. If price rises intrabar, the latest gain grows and RSI rises; if price falls back, it drops. The final value is known only at the close.

Example: an alert that fired and vanished

Illustrative: an 'RSI crosses above 70' alert set to fire once per bar triggers at 10:05 when RSI touches 71 during a spike. By the close, RSI is 66. The historical chart never shows a cross above 70 on that bar, so a backtest of the same rule would not include that trade. Using a bar-close trigger aligns alerts with history.
