MFI Reversal Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs

MFI reversal rules buy when Money Flow Index is oversold and turns up. Like other oscillator reversals, they win small and often, which makes costs decisive.

Short answer

An MFI reversal strategy enters when MFI drops below a threshold (e.g. 20) and then rises back above it, exiting at a target or MFI level. Because MFI weights typical price by volume, signals cluster around high-volume sell-offs, where slippage is larger. Compute break-even cost with sell-off slippage, add a trend filter to avoid catching falling markets, use closed bars only (MFI can jump intrabar) and compare with an RSI version to see whether the volume weighting adds value.
