Open Interest in Contracts vs Coins in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context

Open interest can be quoted in contracts or in coins. When one contract isn't one coin, the two series move differently.

Short answer

Open interest in contracts counts open contracts; in coins, it counts the underlying amount they represent. For linear USDT-margined contracts where one contract equals one coin they match; for multiplier contracts (e.g. 1000PEPEUSDT) or coin-margined contracts quoted in USD per contract, they differ by a factor or move with price. Before reading OI with price, confirm the contract size and convert to coins for positioning analysis, so a change in OI reflects positions rather than contract specification.

How units differ

Contract type1 contract =Coins from contracts
Linear BTCUSDT1 BTCSame number
1000PEPEUSDT1,000 PEPE× 1,000
Coin-margined BTCUSD$100 of BTC (typical inverse spec)÷ price × 100

Coin-margined (inverse) contracts have a fixed USD value per contract, so the coin amount they represent falls as price rises, even with no new positions.
