Options Put-Call Volume Ratios in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
The put-call volume ratio compares the day's traded puts with traded calls. It shows activity, not whether puts were bought or sold.
Short answer
Put-call volume ratio = put volume ÷ call volume over a period. A high ratio means more put contracts traded, but each trade has a buyer and a seller, so the ratio alone can't say whether traders were hedging, speculating on downside or selling puts for income. Read it with price and with taker direction where available (Deribit trades report the taker's direction). A spike in put volume during a sell-off with puts taken aggressively is more informative than the ratio by itself.
What it can and can't say
| Reading | Possible meanings |
|---|---|
| Ratio > 1 | More puts traded: hedging, downside bets or put selling |
| Ratio < 1 | More calls traded |
| Spike in a sell-off | Protection demand (check taker side) |
| Spike in a rally | Put selling or hedging gains |
