Order Flow Around FOMC Releases in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
FOMC decisions arrive with a statement and, later, a press conference. Crypto order flow often reacts twice, and the second reaction can reverse the first.
Short answer
Around an FOMC decision, liquidity often thins before the statement, aggressive flow arrives at release, and a second wave follows during the press conference. Measure depth, spread, delta and liquidations in fixed windows around both times (in UTC), and compare the first reaction's direction with the price 60–90 minutes later. Whether the first move holds is the key price-response question.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| First move holds through presser | Consistent reaction |
| Reverses during presser | Second-wave repricing |
| Liquidations dominate | Forced flow |
| Small reaction | Expected outcome |
Measuring the response
Record depth and spread before, delta and liquidations at each stage, and price at fixed offsets. Compare across meetings.
Example
Illustrative: the statement produced +1.2% on buying; during the press conference selling took over and price ended below the pre-release level.
