Order Flow Around Funding Settlement: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Funding settles at fixed times. Some traders close or open positions just before or after, which can show up in order flow around settlement.
Short answer
Around a funding settlement (e.g. every 8 hours on many Binance contracts, hourly on Hyperliquid), positions held at the settlement time pay or receive funding. When funding is high, some longs close before settlement and reopen after, which can show as selling then buying around the time. Check delta, OI and price in a window around settlement and compare with ordinary times. Effects, if any, vary by market and rate.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Selling before, buying after | Funding avoidance |
| OI dip around settlement | Positions closed temporarily |
| No difference | Effect not present |
| Basis shift | Premium adjusting |
Measuring the response
Compare delta, OI and price in fixed windows around settlements with the same windows at random times, split by funding level.
Example
Illustrative: when funding was above 0.05%, OI dipped about 0.6% around settlement and recovered after. At normal funding, no pattern appeared.
