Order Flow During a Failed Breakout in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
A failed breakout traps traders who entered on the break. Order flow shows the trap forming; price response shows whether they're forced out.
Short answer
During a failed breakout, aggressive buying above the range is absorbed, price closes back inside, and late breakout buyers are trapped. Signs: positive delta without progress, OI rising at the high (new longs), then falling as price returns (longs exiting). Price response after the failure — continued move back through the range — tests whether trapped traders add selling pressure.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Delta up, no progress | Absorption at the break |
| OI up at high, then down | Trapped longs exiting |
| Close back inside | Failure confirmed |
| Continues through range | Trap fuel |
Measuring the response
Record delta and OI at the breakout high and over the following bars; measure how far price travels back through the range.
Example
Illustrative: 420 BTC of buying at the break, OI +2.1%, then a close back inside and OI −2.8% within an hour as price fell to the range middle.
