Order Flow During the US Open in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
When US equity markets open, crypto often sees a burst of volume and volatility. Order flow at the open shows whether that participation sets direction.
Short answer
Around the US equity open (13:30 UTC during US daylight time, 14:30 UTC otherwise), crypto volume often rises as traditional-market participants and correlated flows arrive. Measure delta, volume and price over fixed windows after the open, and check whether the open's direction holds through the session. Adjust for daylight-saving changes in UTC.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Open direction holds | Session trend set |
| Reverses within an hour | Opening noise |
| Volume spike, no direction | Two-sided |
| Spot-led | Broad participation |
Measuring the response
Use the correct UTC open time for the date, record delta and volume, and compare first-30-minute direction with end-of-session direction.
Example
Illustrative: on days when the first 30 minutes after the open showed spot-led buying, the session closed higher more often than on perp-led days. Test it yourself.
