Spot-Perpetual CVD Disagreement: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

Spot and perpetual CVD disagree. Price response shows which side the market is actually following.

Short answer

When spot CVD and perpetual CVD point in different directions, price response settles which flow is driving: if price follows spot CVD, cash buyers or sellers are in control and the perp flow is being absorbed or hedged; if price follows perp CVD, leverage is driving and spot is passive. If price follows neither, both flows are being absorbed by passive liquidity. Measure the price change per unit of each CVD over the same windows. Follow the flow that price is responding to, and watch funding for signs that leverage is overextended.

Measuring the response

Normalise each CVD by its market's volume (see the normalisation guide), then compare price change per unit of normalised delta for each over the same windows. The market whose delta better explains price is leading.

Example

Illustrative: over an hour, spot CVD rises strongly while perp CVD falls; price rises 0.6% and funding drifts negative. Spot buyers are driving while perp traders short into the move, setting up potential short covering.

Questions readers ask

Which CVD should I trust when they disagree?

The one price is responding to.
