Trading-Journal Partial Fills: A Worked Crypto Example With Fees Included
A limit order that fills partly, with the rest completed at market, has two prices and two fee rates. The journal should record both.
Short answer
When a limit order partially fills and the remainder is completed with a market order, the trade has a blended entry price and blended fees. Example: buy 1 BTC with a limit at $60,000; 0.4 BTC fills (maker 0.02% ≈ $4.80) and 0.6 BTC is bought at market for $60,050 (taker 0.05% ≈ $18.02). Average entry is $60,030 and fees ≈ $22.82 — versus $12 if all had filled as maker. Record each fill so slippage and fee rates are visible in reviews.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Limit fill | 0.4 BTC at $60,000 (fee ≈ $4.80) |
| Market fill | 0.6 BTC at $60,050 (fee ≈ $18.02) |
| Average entry | $60,030 |
| Total fees | ≈ $22.82 |
| All-maker fees | $12.00 |
| Entry slippage vs limit | $30 |
Recording fills
| Field | Per fill |
|---|---|
| Quantity | 0.4 / 0.6 |
| Price | 60,000 / 60,050 |
| Liquidity | Maker / taker |
| Fee | $4.80 / $18.02 |
If partial fills are common, compare the fill rate of limit orders with the cost of waiting.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
