Trading-Journal Setup Tags in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

'Tag every trade by setup and drop the losing ones' works only if tags are honest and samples are big enough. Both often fail.

Short answer

Setup tags mislead when they're assigned after the outcome (winners get the 'good' tag), when there are so many tags that each has a handful of trades, or when one tag mixes different ideas. Dropping a 'losing setup' based on 9 trades may discard a real edge. Fix the tag list in advance, tag at entry, require a minimum count per tag (e.g. 30) before decisions, and review tags whose rules drift.

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
