TradingView Bar Replay for Crypto: History Limits and Live-Data Traps
Bar Replay hides future bars on the chart, but not everything in TradingView is replaying with you. Know what stays live and what history your plan allows.
Short answer
TradingView's Bar Replay lets you pick a start point and step or play bars forward, in one chart or all charts in a layout. During replay, server-side alerts keep firing on real-time data, broker and paper orders execute on real-time data, and quotes in panels stay live; you cannot create new server-side alerts, and non-standard chart types, spread and tick charts, Regression Trend and Fixed Range Volume Profile do not work. Intraday replay history depends on plan: none on Basic, 180 days of minute data on Essential, 365 on Plus, all minute and second data from Premium.
What keeps running in real time
TradingView's help page lists these explicitly. A practice session that glances at a live watchlist has already seen the future.
What does not work
| Not supported in replay | Implication |
|---|---|
| Creating server-side alerts | Set alerts before or after |
| Non-standard chart types (Renko, Heikin Ashi etc.) | Practice on standard candles |
| Spread and tick-based charts | Use time-based charts |
| Regression Trend, Fixed Range Volume Profile | Use other profile types |
A replay session that stays honest
Set up a dedicated layout for replay with only the chart you are practising on. Close the watchlist, collapse the trading panel and turn off any widget that shows live quotes. If you use multiple charts, use the replay mode that syncs all charts to the same start point so none of them shows later data.
Choose a start date you have not studied, preferably one you cannot place in memory. Write the plan for the next bar before each step forward: what would make you enter, what would make you wait, where you would be wrong. Step one bar at a time during decisions and use autoplay only to skip quiet periods.
After the session, remove drawings and indicators added during replay, because TradingView says they remain on the chart afterwards. Log the date range, interval and your decisions so you can repeat the same window later and see whether your judgement changed.
Live-data traps and how to avoid them
- Hide or collapse watchlist and trading panels before starting.
- Use a new layout dedicated to replay.
- Write your plan for each bar before stepping forward.
- Remove drawings and indicators added in replay afterwards; they stay on the chart.
- Record the start date so you can repeat the session.
