Bollinger Percent B in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
%B shows where price sits relative to the Bollinger Bands: 0 at the lower band, 1 at the upper. Both numerator and denominator move intrabar.
Short answer
%B = (price − lower band) ÷ (upper band − lower band). On the live bar, price, both bands and the band width all change. When bands are narrow, a small price move can swing %B well beyond 0 or 1; as the bands widen during the move, %B can come back. Thresholds like %B > 1 should be judged on closed bars, and %B values compared with band width to avoid over-reading narrow-band readings.
Which part of Bollinger %B uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Yes | Moves |
| Lower band | Yes | Moves |
| Band width (denominator) | Yes | Small width amplifies |
With narrow bands the denominator is small, so %B behaves like an amplified price oscillator.
