Heatmap Missing-Depth Zones in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Some heatmap zones show no depth because the book was thin there — or because the data stopped. Price response is different for each.
Short answer
A missing-depth zone is a band on the heatmap with no visible resting size. It can be a real liquidity gap (price may move through quickly), beyond the depth range collected, or a data gap (disconnection, venue outage). Check which before reading price response: real gaps tend to be crossed fast; collection limits say nothing; data gaps mean the heatmap is silent, not the market.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Real thin zone | Fast traverse expected |
| Beyond depth range | Not collected |
| Data gap (time) | No information |
| Venue outage | Market issue |
Measuring the response
Check whether trades continued during the gap, whether other levels were shown, and whether the zone is within the collected depth range. Measure traverse speed only for real thin zones.
Example
Illustrative: an empty band at 59,300–59,500 lasted five minutes, but all levels vanished at once and the tape stopped. It was a reconnect, not a liquidity hole.
