RSI in Crypto: Warm-Up Bars and Short-History Errors

RSI needs history before its value settles. On new listings or short data pulls, early RSI values are distorted — and look like real oversold or overbought readings.

Short answer

RSI(14) needs at least 14 price changes before it can be computed, and because Wilder smoothing is recursive, values keep depending on the starting point for many bars after that. On a coin listed a few days ago, or on a short data request, RSI can show extreme readings that a longer history wouldn't. Drop or flag warm-up bars (a common rule of thumb is several times the length), compare RSI computed from different start dates, and don't screen new listings with RSI thresholds without a history check.

Short-history errors

  • New listings flagged 'oversold' after a launch dump
  • Screens over mixed histories (old and new coins)
  • API pulls of 100 bars used for RSI on the first bars
  • Gaps in data restarting the recursion
