Stop-Distance Position Sizing in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result
Size = risk ÷ stop distance is the standard rule. With very tight stops it produces huge positions where fees and slippage, not the stop, decide the loss.
Short answer
The rule size = risk ÷ stop distance ignores costs. With $500 risk and a 0.1% stop it gives $500,000 notional; round-trip fees (0.1%) add $500 and 0.02% slippage adds $100, so a stopped trade loses ≈ $1,100 — more than double the plan, and the size may also exceed leverage or liquidation limits. Include costs in the denominator: $500 ÷ (0.1% + 0.1% + 0.02%) ≈ $227,000. The tighter the stop, the more the simple rule misleads.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Risk | $500 |
| Stop | 0.10% |
| Simple size | $500,000 |
| Fees (0.1% round trip) | $500 |
| Slippage (0.02%) | $100 |
| Actual loss at stop | ≈ $1,100 |
| Cost-aware size | ≈ $227,000 |
When the rule misleads
| Stop distance | Costs as share of stop (0.12%) |
|---|---|
| 0.1% | 120% |
| 0.5% | 24% |
| 2% | 6% |
Also check that the computed notional fits your venue's leverage brackets and keeps liquidation beyond the stop.

Why does the simple sizing rule fail?
It ignores fees and slippage, which dominate tight stops.
What's the fix?
Add costs to the stop distance.
What else should I check?
Leverage limits and liquidation.
Sources and methodology
Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
